Some bursaries good to know

Please find the lists of bursaries on the website listed at the bottom of the blog. You will find plenty of corporate bursaries for Engineering and business studies, but here are some bursaries you might not know.

A. Bursaries for students from underprivileged background :

1. “Study trust - FET colleges, national diplomas (long list) and some degrees (Agriculture, commerce, education, engineering) - - office at UJ (Kingsway campus - Masada Building,) – visit by appointment only - 011.726-5604. - 09:00-12:00 & 14:00-16:00. 2. HCI Foundation: 1200 bursaries/year. – bursaries for academically deserving and financially needy undergraduate students in any field of study, and any year of study, for a first tertiary qualification. The award pays a percentage of registration and course fees. 021-424-6010 - deadline 15 Oct

3.The South African Institute of Race Relations: For 2010 we are funding 77 students at university. Most of these come from very poor backgrounds but demonstrate much academic promise. Bursary applications open of the first of June and close on 31 October every year.

5. ELB Educational Trust - engineering degrees - - Mollo -2711 772 1547 - 082 066 0560.

6. University Scholarships for South African Students INC (US funders)- gives scholarship aid to poor Black students in South Africa attending universities and technikons (Unisa, Univ of Cape town, Durban) to study medicine – social work and health related studies. Recipient must participate in the AIDS Awareness and Prevention campaign on his or her home campus -

B. Bursaries for various studies :

1- PPS -awards up to 10 bursaries annually, to the value of R15,000 each, on the condition that the student is promoted to the next year of academic study. PPS awards a Scholarship valued at R40,000, to a student with exceptional academic results. The award covers tuition fees and books, as well as accommodation and allowance. Scholarship is awarded based on academic merit. To be eligible for the PPS Scholarship or Bursaries Award, you need to be:-Studying for a profession, which on qualification, would be eligible for PPS membership (e.g. medicine, law, dentistry, accountancy, engineering, M.Tech, D.Tech...etc) Visit the Social Investments section of the PPS website ( for all the details. 2-The Bursary Institute of SA offers bursaries in various fields of business, finance, marketing, HR, secretarial, IT, journalism, finance, accounting, human resources, journalism, marketing, public relations, paralegal, secretary and administration, sound engineering, tourism and hospitality, fashion, hair and beauty, early childhood, sport admin, aids counselling, call centre from various private college (– apply online : - – cost R 295

3. Allan Gray Orbis foundation - B average for Grade 11 results and minimum C in Math (+ “imagination, initiative, selflessness, commitment and excellence), he can apply for full bursary Engineering, Law and Humanities (majoring in Politics, Economics or Philosophy), Science (excluding :Medicine) or Commerce degree at Wits-Deadline : 31 May To apply : sms “FELLOW, your email” to 33423 and you will get the application form by mail -Ex - “FELLOW, -

C. Legal-
-Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr: Scroll right down to the bottom of their careers webpage to find out details about their bursary program.
-Webber Wentzel: Have scholarship opportunities for individuals.
-The attorneys’ profession also offers limited number of bursaries through the Attorneys’ Fidelity Fund. The rules and conditions of such bursaries and bursary application forms are available to download at:
-Liberty Life: Offer a bursary targeted at the Actuarial Science field.
-Investec : commerce students
D. Accounting-
-Grant Thornton: Has a straight forward bursary online application form that an individual can complete.
-BDO Spencer Steward: has bursary offering for students registering or currently studying for career as a Chartered Accountant.
-Deloitte: Check out their bursary and scholarship offerings.
-Auditor General South Africa: is targeted at individuals currently studying or intending to study towards a chartered accountancy career. (note: click on their career page to access information of their bursary offerings).
-PWC: Have bursary offerings targeted at scholars and students.
-Thuthuka Bursary Fund (SAICA)
-Old Mutual bursaries

E. Bursaries for specific students

The Businesswomen’s Association has been awarding bursaries since 1988!

Epilepsy South Africa: Has a bursary program to help aid people with epilepsy to study at tertiary level.

1.The Foundation for Professional Development: Offers scholarships targeted at the health sector.

2. The Government offers various bursaries, for instance, to become a teacher ( or a social worker ( – go to social work scholarship on the left).

F. Various other fields-

International Hotel School Bursary Competition SANDTON CAMPUS - DEADLINE 13 May 2011 - bursary valued at R160 000 to study fulltime for THREE years at The International Hotel School (Tuition Fees only).

G. Bursaries you do not need to apply for :

Merit bursaries are given by universities (check on their websites) according to your Grade 12 results.

Scholarships are awarded to Matric students who achieved distinctions. Most of the time, there are no employment conditions attached. The Vincent
Tshabalala Trust Fund awarded 10 scholarships to Alexandra top students (ranging from R30 000 to R50 000). The Gauteng City Region Academy awards also scholarship to top matric learners of Alexandra. ( / 011 556 9000).

H. Gap year at the African Leadership Academy (Honeydew, north of Johannesburg)

This excellent international African academy gives full bursary to good learners between 16 and 19 years old from Africa, with leadership qualities (example, leader at school, in their church, sport club, community, youngsters who started business, who helped to solve problems, who took initiative...). It is a boarding high school but a unique chance to get a really good education (class size of 12 !)before going to Varsity in South Africa or abroad…..
